Who We Are

Who are the Vermont Midwives?

The Vermont Midwives Association (VMA) brings together midwives, student midwives and their supporters to create a vital and healthy community of childbirth workers. Midwifery is thriving in Vermont! Our personalized approach is refreshing and our outcomes are exceptional. Overall, maternity care improves through the midwifery practice model.

As an organization, the VMA:

  • Promotes quality improvement:
On a statewide basis we have an internal quality assurance and quality improvement mechanism that features continuing education, peer review, mandated meetings and maintenance of each midwife's practice data. In addition, we are members of Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network (NNEPQIN).

  • Endorses evidence based care:
Keeping up to date on evidence based care improves outcomes, including reduced cesarean rates and unnecessary interventions.

  • Maintains a membership who is actively involved:
Our voting members are Certified Professional Midwives (CPM’s), Naturopathic Physicians (ND’s) and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM’s). They are actively involved in continuing education and peer review. In Vermont, Licensed Midwives are overseen by the Office of Professional Regulation.

  • Supports legislative work:
The VMA supports legislation that increases access to insurance coverage for families choosing home birth. While we have already helped pass legislation to increase coverage for homebirth, we still need legislation to ensure that families obtain coverage for the provider of their choice.

History

We are only able to do what we do today by way of the heavy lifting of the many midwives who walked before us. The VMA was instrumental in passing legislation in 2001 to license Certified Professional Midwives as health care providers. In 2011 we succeeded in getting legislation passed that mandates coverage of home birth by Health Insurance carriers.

Mission

Our mission is to have all Vermont families know about and have access to personalized maternity care in the setting of their choice. We value positive relationships with allied healthcare professionals to produce high-quality progressive maternity care for women and their families.
